LX&R Design is proud to be first in offering custom Passive Solar Hybrid residential design service. Hybrid designs are a combination of both Passive Solar Adobe and Straw bale construction which results in maximum solar efficiency while retaining the affordability and simplicity of construction which is ideal for the owner / builder. Adobe is an excellent mass in which to store heat, but, it has little insulation value. Straw Bales act as an excellent insulator, but, being of low mass, do not retain heat well. Using heat retention value of adobe and the insulative quality of straw bales, a Hybrid home takes full advantage of the unique qualities these two natural building materials. The result is a home which is affordable, relatively inexpensive, easy to build and extremely energy efficient.
